Rich, Jo, and I have more or less finally recovered from the MapServer User Meeting
& Open Source Geospatial 2005 conference in Minneapolis, which I must
say absolutely rocked and then some. I meant to do some blogging from the
conference but got utterly swept away by people and events — but I think Gnat
more or less captured
the basic tenor of the event. Among the many highlights was the award to
Frank Warmerdam - author of the foreward to Mapping Hacks, not to
mention much of the most widely used Open Source GIS software out there - of
the very first Sol Katz Memorial Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source
Software, to a wild standing ovation, a fitting tribute to both Sol’s legacy
and Frank’s ongoing contributions to the field.
Certainly, a million thanks are due for Kari, Steve, Perry, Ken, Howard, and
all the other folks who did the work to make it one of the all-around best
conference experiences we’ve ever had. We can’t wait for OS Geo 2006 in
Lausanne! In that spirit, we present to you slides and/or notes and/or cartoons
for the talks presented at the conference by yours truly, the authors of
Mapping Hacks, in approximately chronological order:
We hope you find the talk slides entertaining, at the very least.
In other news, the O’Reilly Network have published a sample hack from
Mapping Hacks, also on geocoding
US street addresses, in preparation for Where 2.0 in San Francisco
next week, where I will be speaking on a panel entitled “What Is
a Sustainable Business for Data?“… Come out and see the sparks fly!
