Google Add DigitalGlobe, EarthSat Imagery

April 5th, 2005 by Schuyler

As reported by Business Week and seen on #mapserver:

Online search engine leader Google has unveiled a new feature that will enable
its users to zoom in on homes and businesses using satellite images, an advance
that may raise privacy concerns as well as intensify the competitive pressures
on its rivals…. This marks the first time since the deal closed that Google
has offered free access to Keyhole’s high-tech maps through its search engine.

The prevailing wisdom on #mapserver is that, as could be expected, that the
map and the satellite imagery don’t align perfectly everywhere. Of course, our
Locative US
Earth Browser
has had free satellite
imagery
via JPL’s WMS for
months - the same dataset used by WorldWind. (Also, not too
surprisingly, JPL’s server seems to be offline this afternoon with a “Service
denied due to system overload” message…)
